Overwatch earned USD 500 Million last 2016
That sure is a lot of money for loot boxes.
Overwhelming may just be an understatement to describe 2016 for Blizzard’s online shooter Overwatch as aside from setting new records for the surge in the number of players it also reportedly netted more than half a billion US dollars in revenue making it the highest selling premium PC video game title of 2016.
According to Superdata Research, Overwatch was able to bag USD 585.5 Million in revenues making it earn the sweet top spot and twice the lead in revenues against the second ranking title, Valve’s Counter Strike: Global Offensive which sits at USD 257.2 million.
Despite being big in the Premium PC games market, Overwatch is still yet to topple the bigger whales, especially in the competitive PC games field which is still dominated by Riot Games’ League of Legends, which 2016 revenues sit at USD 1.7 Billion. Still, there is much to come to Overwatch as Blizzard slowly rolls out their future plans for the game which include creating more seasonal events to help generate more revenue, in-game content like new heroes and maps and as well as their plans for Overwatch in the realm of Esports.
