Boston Major groups and schedule now out, Groupstage to utilize GSL format, Playoffs to use Single Elimination stage
The Boston Major is nigh!
With only hours to go before the 4th installment of Majors Tournament series for Dota 2, Valve finally unveils the Groupstages and Match schedules for the Boston Major 2016. For the Groupstage matches, the 16 participating teams will be grouped into 4 groups of 4 with each group to undergo Double Elimination, Best-of-3 matches to determine the main stage seeds, the winners of each group will get to pick their first opponent in the main stage from the pool of teams that finished last at the groupstages, whereas the 2nd place seeds will get to battle the teams that finish 3rd. The main stage will then proceed with a Single Elimination format, with all matches played Best of 3, except for the Finals which will be Best of 5.
This is notably the first time that a Majors tournament that a double elimination groupstage and single elimination main stage is utilized for the past Majors have used the round-robin groupstage concept with the mainstage being a double elimination event with upper bracket and lower bracket seeds.
Together with the reveal of the groupstages, much discussion as to which teams will make it to the top and bottom seeds are now ongoing, with fans already speculating easy wins for teams such as Evil Geniuses and OG Dota 2 on their respective groups. Meanwhile, Group B seems to be the most heavily contested with 3 top ranking teams, NP, Virtus.pro and Newbee contesting for the top seed. Another notable match is Warriors Gaming.Unity‘s trial by fire as they take on the TI6 Champions, Wings Gaming right off the bat.
The Boston Major 2016 will commence this coming Dec 3, 2016 at 11:00 PM PHT.
