Facebook’s PC digital video game distribution platform, Gameroom, is now live
You better watch out Steam(?)
Facebook’s entry to the PC gaming arena, their digital distribution platform Gameroom, has officially gone live and ready for download and install for Windows users. Designed to function the same way as digital distribution clients like Steam and Origin, Facebook’s Gameroom will initially feature a huge chunk of games that are published through the social media giant.
In addition to being a separate platform where Facebook users can play Facebook games, whether based on web or mobile, the Gameroom also caters towards developers, preferrably those who utilize the Unity Game Engine as a platform for them to publish their games. While Facebook may have reached 1.7 Billion active users this 2016, the social media giant is still up with bigger competition as the PC video game field is still dominated by names like Valve’s Steam when it comes to digital distribution.
However, with its attempt to reach out to developers, the Gameroom will serve as a new platform for video game creators especially to Unity users, as an “Export to Facebook” function will be made available on Unity’s upcoming build as part of the social media giant’s collaboration with Unity Technologies, and will hopefully feature more diverse titles as time passes.
The Facebook Gameroom is available for the Windows 7 and up and can be downloaded via Facebook.com/Gameroom.
