Looks like Shaq isn’t the only big Sports personality in Esports.
More and more sports personalities, particularly in the area of basketball, are venturing into Esports as Team Liquid recently reveals that they have finalized a strategic partnership with some of NBA’s big names like Golden State Warriors co-owner Peter Guber, Washington Wizards majority owner Ted Leonsis and NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson. This after a recent announcement regarding the acquisition of Esports organizations Dignitas and Apex by long time NBA franchise Philadelphia 76ers.
The strategic deal will have Team Liquid grant a controlling share to a group called aXiomatic Esports which is lead by Guber and Leonsis, and Johnson being one of the co-owning investors. While Team Liquid will still be able to retain their current CEOs, Steve Arhancet and Victor Goossens, both Guber and Leonsis will serve as the organization’s co-chairmen while aXiomatic will now former Sony Interactive head Bruce Stein as their CEO.
Apart from co-owning an NBA franchise, Peter Guber is also the chairman of Mandalay Entertainment which owns minor-league baseball teams through its Mandalay Sports Entertainment arm, while Ted Leonsis also holds major stakes in other sports franchises such as the NHL and the WNBA.
Team Liquid is one of the long running and well recognized multiregional Electronic Sports organization founded back in 2000 and initially served as a hub for professional StarCraft before expanding into Dota 2 by 2012 and then venturing into other Esports titles such as League of Legends and Counter Strike Global Offensive.
