Wait, Video Games and Books? How is it even possible?

Imagine stepping inside your neighborhood video game lounge, seeing your friends together with other familiar faces enjoying console fighting game titles, then as you enjoy the sight of your regular gaming weekend, something catches the corner of your vision which you will initially think out of place but is gladly there with its own patrons enjoying the tales that they are reading all amidst the noise of clicked controllers and the cheering and the banter. A book shop right in the midst of a Video Game lounge, or perhaps a Video Game lounge that is attached to a book shop, that is PlayBook.

First opened last November 8, 2013, PlayBook has already become a well known name for its unique mix of Video Games and Books serving customers from nearly totally different interests, and making their way to events and conventions as video game event organizers. Their latest appearance include their participation as a tournament host in the recently concluded Asia Pop Comic Con Manila 2016 where they also had their own exhibit to invite new customers to test out both their video game features and as well as their featured book titles.

Aside from their booth at APCC, PlayBook was also part of the Esports Festival as the official handler of its SFV and NBA2K16 Tournaments.

But just how did the uncanny mix of video games and books that is PlayBook came to be? In our quick chat with PlayBook’s owner, Mr. Richard Brojan, back at APCC Manila 2016, he states that idea behind PlayBook was a result of a compromise that he and his wife made when they decided to put up a business that is also their passion. As what Richard describes, he is a gamer while his wife is an avid book enthusiast, and while both were initially keen on opening up either a book store or a video game lounge, they have both came to agreement to open up both instead and hence PlayBook was born.

While people may initially think that they are more into Fighting Game titles, sports games are currently taking the lion’s share of the spotlight at PlayBook for Richard states that, as of the moment, the business’ “bread and butter is basically NBA 2K16” as it is currently the most in-demand game among the Basketball loving Filipino gamers.

Even APCC attendees who dropped by Playbook helped solidify this notion as most of them spend a match or 2 pitting Curry against Lebron.

Still, a good variety of Fighting Games still continue to find their haven at PlayBook as numerous selections include the recently released Street Fighter V, popular titles from the Tekken series, and Guilty Gear games. As for the Books though, Richard admits that he definitely is not the book worm in the family as he simply states that fiction titles are what’s currently in demand from PlayBook’s shelves.

As far as tournaments and competitions are concerned, PlayBook is not at all limited to event-only appearances for competitions for they have also been known to host regular tournaments, and as well as collaborating with gamin communities for events that feature numerous titles like Smash Bros., Guilty Gear, and even Gundam Extreme Versus Full Boost. Inhouse events are also regularly held for customers who want their slice of competitive gaming without having to fully commit to it such as their famed Shoryuken Fridays which feature Street Fighter players and is streamed via PlayBook’s very own Twitch Channel.

Their appearance at APCC Manila 2016 is also not a first time for them when it comes to convention participation as they have already been part of other locally hosted gaming gatherings such as the BrawlFest at the Esports and Gaming Summit and the Pinoy Gaming Festival.

From leet competitions, avid book lovers, or if you’re just someone who wants to enjoy gamin as it should be, Richard gladly invites you to visit PlayBook and enjoy your slice of this uncanny mix of video games and book worms right at the heart of Metro Manila.

PlayBook Video Game Lounge and Bookshop currently has 2 branches located in the following areas:

  • 2nd Floor Pergola Mall, Aguirre St., BF Homes, Parañaque City
  • 3rd level, Circuit Lane, Circuit Makati, Makati City
