League of Legends just became part of Australian University Sporting Events and Leagues
Riot Games’ popular Multiplayer Online Battle Arena title is now officially sanctioned as part of Sporting leagues and events for Australian Universities!
The Australian University Sport, the peak governing body of university sports events in Australia, and an official partner of the Australian Sports Commission just announced that League of Legends is officially sanctioned as a part of their Unigames program to “allow more students to get involved in representing their universities and TAFEs at a regional and national level”.
Australian University Sport CEO Don Knapp has stated that this decision was due to the “student engagement opportunities that result from the rapidly increasing popularity of esports across campuses in Australia “. The organization is aiming to promote, not only League of Legends, but Esports in general as a way to help expand their reach to broader campus communities.
With this decision, League of Legends will now be part of the Regional University Games, with the competition to be held online and will invite universities from the Eastern, Northern, and Southern Regions of Australia, as well as the Western Region and New Zealand via Wildcard, the games will commence this coming July 5-7., 2016, and will have its final at the Australian University Games this coming September 25-30, 2016 in Perth, Australia.
